Epidiolex: The First Approved CBD Prescription

Several studies have been conducted on the use of CBD products as an alternative treatment for many health issues such as anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. In 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a cannabidiol oral solution as the first cannabis-based medication that could be prescribed to patients. Epidiolex was approved to treat two rare forms of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastuate Syndrome.

Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gustaut Syndrome are both rare, genetic conditions that appear in the early stages of life. These conditions cause involuntary muscle spams and many varying forms of seizures that require a large amount of medical care. Children with Dravet Syndrome typically have a hard time developing language and motor skills and also struggle with empathy. For children with Lennox-Gastuat syndrome, seizures cause them to develop intellectual disabilities and problems learning motor skills like sitting and crawling.

How Epidiolex Helps Treat Rare Forms of Epilepsy

In a clinical trial, 120 children and young adults ages 2 to19 were given Epidiolex for three and a half months. The results showed half the average number of seizures compared to the amount each patient experienced before treatment. Additionally, Epidiolex, taken with other medications, was shown to be effective in reducing the frequency of seizures when compared with placebo.

According to GW Pharmaceuticals Chief Executive Officer, Justin Gover, patients in the past have not responded well to seizure medications that were previously available. Epidiolex was created during a time of need for alternative medicine that could help reduce the frequency and impact of seizures caused by these conditions.
